The marvellously powerfully-voiced Etta James finished her life in a much neater fashion than she had lived it: she released a stylish, self-declared final album, The Dreamer, on the Decca label at the end of last year, and has now died of leukaemia. As a singer who could range from the serenely spiritual to the rough and raunchy, she reigned supreme.
Of course, all over the media in the next day or two you will hear her calling card At Last, but in the meantime here is the title track of that last album:
