Nicky Schrire at The Forge tonight

This site tends to concentrate on the English Midlands when it comes to live jazz, though we do make exceptions, especially for friends of thejazzbreakfast, of which London-born, South African-raised, New York-resident vocalist Nicky Schrire is one.

Nicky is in London for just one performance, and it’s tonight at The Forge in Camden, and she has an ace home-grown band with her in the form of pianist Nikki Iles, bassist Ryan Trebilcock and drummer Dave Hamblett.

She is very much in the new vanguard of US-based singers that includes Gretchen Parlato and Becca Stevens, but that upbringing – working with South African musicians, as well as absorbing the jazz of that country – brings a fresh flavour to the mix, both in her original writing and in her rhythmic feel. Nicky is definitely worth checking out.

Doors open at 7pm for diners, the music starts at 8pm, and you can find out more as well as book tickets here.
