Catching up with Wayne

wayneshorter8-a605060ab9abaa9650418142bcfd2d58e5a0f03a-s6-c30As the chief cook and bottle-washer at thejazzbreakfast has been on his summer hols, we have been a little tardy on the subject of Wayne Shorter’s 80th birthday. I know we claim to be hiply behind the beat but this is ridiculous!

So, sorry Wayne, and a belated many happy returns for Sunday.

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview Chris Barton did with Wayne for the LA Times. It is full of those “Mr Gone” answers; often oblique – as oblique as his playing – and just as profound. As he says in the interview: “The instrument doesn’t play you anymore, you play the instrument.”

And for Jazz on 3‘s marvellous celebratory programme about Wayne’s 80th, you still have a few days left to listen to this.
