Matt feels the organ’s lure

Keyboard player Matt Ratcliffe, a Birmingham Conservatoire graduate now a very versatile and active player in all kinds of contexts on the local jazz scene, has become increasingly enamoured with the organ of late.

It is behind that instrument that we find him leading a quartet tomorrow evening. With him are guitarist Gareth Fowler, tenor saxophonist Ben Martin and drummer Tymek Jozwiak.

They will be playing tunes linked with guitarists or organists – John Scofield, Pat Martino and Larry Young in particular – as well as, of course, Thelonious Monk. What band worth its salt doesn’t include a Monk tune in its set?

Expect hard-driving grooves, explosive solos and a great deal of fun.

The Matt Ratcliffe Organ Quartet will be at The Ort Cafe – Tymek programmes the regular Friday evening jazz sessions there and very good they are, too – with the music starting around 8.30pm, entrance £5 on the door (£3 concessions) and a lovely relaxed atmosphere about the place.
