Christine Tobin takes Mr Yeats on tour

Christine Tobin is taking her Sailing To Byzantium music on the road next month for nine dates, including three in the Midlands.

Sailing To Byzantium is her latest CD on the Trail Belle label, comprising 13 poems by W B Yeats set to music by Christine and sung by her with Phil Robson on guitar, Gareth Lockrane on flutes, Liam Noble on piano, Kate Shortt on cello and Dave Whitford on double bass. You also hear Gabriel Byrne on the album, though I doubt you’ll see him on the tour.

Before reaching Byzantium the band visits:

12 Oct – The Westcoast Bar, Margate
18 Oct – Bonnington Theatre, Nottingham
19 Oct – Millennium Hall, Sheffield
20 Oct – The Edge Arts Centre, Much Wenlock
21 Oct – RNCM, Manchester (part of Manchester Literature Festival)
27 Oct – Triskel Christchurch, Cork (part of Cork Jazz Festival)
2 Nov – The Forge, London
17 Nov – The Cube/Deda Theatre, Derby
30 Nov – Stoke By Nayland Hotel (for Fleece Jazz)

And in addition to all that, Christine is also in Birmingham on 7 October, doing her A Thousand Kisses Deep material (mostly Lenny “Chuckles” Cohen songs) with assistance from Phil Robson and Dave Whitford. It’s a Birmingham Jazz gig and it’s at the Red Lion in the Jewellery Quarter – more info here.

And finally, if you want to know how the Sailing To Byzantium album went down in thejazzbreakfast kitchen, it’s all here.

  1. And of course the tour is supported by Jazz Services.

    • Yes indeed, I’m glad you’ve pointed that out Chris. The support from Jazz Services is making this tour possible and I’d like to use this opportunity to tell all Jazz Breakfast readers how crucial Jazz Services is to jazz musicians, enabling them to get their music out there live around the country. Also, Jazz Services operates a policy of extreme fairness supporting many different styles of jazz but always of high quality.
On a different note, my Nottingham date has changed venue. We’ll be playing at Nottingham Contemporary – The Space – on 18th Oct as before. Also, Gareth Lockrane joins the line-up for the Derby date only.
Finally, thank you Jazz Breakfast for covering my tour! Christine x
