A festival to cheer you up in Winter

Festival time – warm summer days, light evenings, lounging on the grass with beer in hand while the band plays on that outdoor stage. It all seems just a little too far away, doesn’t it? Well, those good people at Southport Melodic Jazz have just the answer: Jazz On A Winter’s Weekend, which takes place in the snuggly confines of the Best Western Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa on Southport Promenade over the weekend of 5-7 February.

It’s the 12th JOAWW and the line-up is pretty impressive: headlining on Saturday evening is the Marius Neset Quartet, the immensely impressive Norwegian saxophonist joined by Ivo Neame on piano, Petter Eldh on double bass and Anton Eger on drums; and on Sunday evening the main slot is filled by Barnes-O’Higgins and the Sax Section – that’s Alan and Dave leading with more saxes in the form of Sam Mayne, Karen Sharp and Judith O’Higgins plus rhythm section.

Also in the weekend line-up are the Ben Cox Band, The Royal Northern College Of Music Big Band with Ryan Quigley as guest soloist, Daniel John Martin, Mads Mathias, the Patrick Cornelius Octet, Alec Dankworth’s Spanish Accents, the Steve Fishwick/Osian Roberts/Frank Basile Sextet, the Dave Newton/Iain Dixon Quartet, and Jim Mullen with the Neil Burns Trio.

There are also Fringe events, talks, a guitar workshop, and art and photography exhibitions.

The festival is selling well but director Geoff Matthews assures me that if you get in sharpish you shouldn’t be disappointed.

  1. I think that the Southport branch of the National Jazz Archive officially opens that weekend too. So another good reason to visit.
