Pictures and words by Garry Corbett
Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton
Percy Pursglove stepped in for the absent Byron Wallen with only a short rehearsal between himself and Mr Toussaint. He hadn’t played with the band prior to taking the stage. I think this flying by the seat of his pants paid off because they were all playing out of their skins. There was heavy emphasis on Wayne Shorter’s compositions for Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and tremendous playing from all concerned. Another triumph for the Arena Theatre.
