Snarky Puppy – Family Dinner – Volume Two

family dinner 2(Ground Up/Universal)

The jazz-funk fusioneers of the moment acted as hosts, arrangers and backing band for a specially convened session with a variety of singers for the first Family Dinner, all the proceeds going to the Virginian arts centre which hosted it; for Volume Two, the band pairs singers and instrumentalists for another musical feast.

So, we get U.S. singer Becca Stevens paired with Scandinavian folk trio Väsen, Peruvian singer Susana Baca with U.S. eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter, Birmingham’s Laura Mvula with Canadian singer and pump organist Michelle Willis, Malian superstar Salif Keita with a Brazilian flute and percussion duo, and young London wizz-kid Jacob Collier with Soul Rebels Brass Band sousaphone player Big Ed Lee.

This one is recorded in New Orleans, in support of The Roots Of Music, an organisation that supports youth music in that city, and as with previous Snarky Puppy albums, you get a DVD of the sessions performed live as well as a CD.

Here is the Baca/Hunter performance:

It always amazes me how bassist Michael League and his band can fill a room with musicians and still get such a marvellously uncluttered sound and sense of space in the music. A thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring watch as well as listen. The Pups continue to break down boundaries and innovate.
