One of jazz and improvised music’s very finest percussionists, Hamid Drake, is coming to the UK early next month for a three-date tour. He will be playing with saxophonist Paul Dunmall, trumpeter Percy Pursglove, pianist Steve Tromans and double bassist Dave Kane.

The tour is organised by Birmingham-based promoters TDE Promotions and Fizzle, and builds on the strong ties that already exist between the twinned cities Birmingham and Chicago, where Drake has long been based.

The band will play in London, Birmingham and Bristol, the last named being a double bill with solo pianist Keith Tippett.

Hamid Drake is a hugely versatile percussionist and often plays with his hands in addition to using conventional sticks on trap drums. He has played a wide range of music from free improv to reggae, and over a long career has collaborated with Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Peter Brotzmann, Fred Anderson and Ken Vandermark. In the 1970s he was a member of Foday Muso Suso’s Mandingo Griot Society. He and Dunmall have played together many times.
